Antoni Roig house

Torredembarra, Spain

2023 -

exterior 2.jpg

The top floor of a nineteenth century house in Torredembarra that has been used for decades as a storage space will be reconverted into a weekend home for a couple. The construction is one of the few buildings in Torredembarra to be listed as cultural heritage for its ornate facades, staircase, and interiors. In contrast to the rest of the building, the interior of the third floor is devoid of ornament, timber beams and white plastered walls define the rich spaces. The project aims to maintain the qualities of the interiors and to further strengthen them by opening spaces up, introducing more natural light and creating a sense of vastness.

Most interior partitions will be removed while the new spaces will be subdivided in a strategic way that provides long visuals and spatial continuity. Instead of having a fragmented layout, a series of connected common areas lead inhabitants throughout the house, allowing them to experience different heights, views, and natural light sources. The existing timber roof structure will be preserved and repaired, introducing thermal insulation to achieve a passive house with a greatly improved energetic performance.
