Goldman Sachs auditorium

London, UK

2013 - 2015

As Architect for Adjaye Associates

(Schematic Design, Design Development)

A 350-seat auditorium and other public spaces for the European headquarters of Goldman Sachs in London were commissioned to Adjaye Associates. The auditorium is conceived as a place for learning and debating, it is therefore more of an interactive space between stage and seats, interior and exterior. The auditorium has a large controllable glazed opening to the east, expressing the interior function on the facade. A series of transparent vestibules and large sliding doors allow for different flexible scenarios in which the auditorium can be opened to the rest of building, both visually and physically depending on the needs of each event. Due to acoustic reasons, the auditorium has an independent structure that “floats” inside the main building structure. This “box in a box” concept ensures that no vibrations or sounds are transmitted through the structure.

One of the main complexities of this project was to coordinate the design with the structure, MEP, consultants and others designers. Particularly the auditorium represents a challenge due to the technical complexities that arise from the structure, the acoustic requirements, the adequate sight lines from the seats, and finding a coherent balance between these parts.
