A minimal-contact implementation guarantees the necessary phasing of construction works. The expansion comprises two volumes: a private block for consultations, separated from the original structure to ensure natural light and ventilation, and a public volume for waiting and circulation, connected to the pre-existing building. A transparent joint resolves this intersection, defining new entrances from Avenida de la Industria and establishing a longitudinal circulation axis for intuitive orientation. Waiting rooms are oriented southeast to maximize the visual connection with adjacent green spaces.
The new addition utilizes industrialized, dry-mounted systems to simplify assembly and future disassembly, avoiding composite materials to ensure component reuse. The primary structure
features low-emission (CEM II/III) precast concrete columns, beams, and foundations with recycled aggregates. This minimizes on-site waste and noise, keeping the Primary Care Center (CAP) operational.
To significantly reduce the carbon footprint, Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels are used for the floor slabs. On the facades, a prefabricated concrete exoskeleton acts as a structural brise-soleil, preventing thermal bridges via standardized joints. The envelope integrates recycled aluminum modules with operable panels for natural ventilation, while pigmented concrete establishes a chromatic dialogue with the original brickwork.
Interventions on the existing building prioritize resource economy and minimal disruption. Functional viability is maintained by preserving the current compartmentalization of the consultation rooms. The floor plan is optimized by enclosing the narrow central courtyard with a solar-protected skylight. Furthermore, the original thermal envelope is upgraded by replacing window frames and selectively enlarging facade openings to increase natural daylight. This strategy efficiently integrates new uses while substantially improving the pre-existing architecture’s thermal performance.
